The Last Elephant in the Room - tarulestheday - 12-11-2013

I think the pattern should be clear to anyone by now. The elephant in the room is actually a 12 million share (pound) short gorilla. The estimates, drilling reports, sell down deals, etc. all are secondary when it comes to the share price because the IOC shorts are committed to holding the stock price in check regardless of the actual news or metrics.

This company should be taken private by Chandler, Paulson, and a band of investors or the company should solitic offers through their IBs. They don't have to accept any offers but it would sure help the share price to get some competitive bidding going.

I can see checking back in here in 2015 after more drilling, more certified resources, possible FID, etc. and the IOC share price still languishing in the high $50's/low $60s.

If the IOC BOD is content with waiting for proper valuation in 2016-2018, they should at least declare a minimum 2:1 stock split to increase the float, declare a one time divi to locate all of the shares, or at least a small ongoing divi for the same reasons.  Lastly, ask the large shareholders to call in their shares that are being used to allow the continued manipulation by the shorts.

Agree.  The follow up from Friday's debacle by the copmany has been just as poor, IMO.  As some have said here, onlly a buyout or threat of one will get this close to true value.  We know the short story now - who knows what the resource is until its been certified.

I would not characterize the company's follow-up as poor this week. Michael, Collin, and Wayne are conducting meetings in Paris, London, New York, etc. Meeting with deep pocketed institutional buyers and analysts right away this week to explain in detail why the deal is so good for IOC is not a bad use of their time.

But what TARules is saying is that it may not matter that "the deal is good".  Admittedly, good fundamentals are hystorically tied to stock price increases...but not always.  In the end, I don't care specifically that "they got the deal" or that "the deal is a good one".  All I care about is pps.  If IOC's environment is such that fundamentals aren't driving pps...then acknowledge that.  If Hession's focus needs to be on "adressing the shorts" moreso than on "getting and explaining deals", then so be it.  Let's not pretend that this isn't the reality of IOC's current environment.  If the only way to win is to sell the company then sell the company.  I don't want to hear anymore that the market doesn't understand a, b, c...or that the shorts are wrong becasue of x, y z.  Let's aknowledge where we are and do whatever needs to be done.

I agree here with ltinvest. It is my belief there are several elements related to the PSA that have yet to be completed and there remain plenty of catalysts for a significant price appreciation throughout next year. I wish I could say I knew of plenty of places that I could with more certainty invest money more effectively the next couple of years than IOC, but I really can't.

As for dividends, I can only dream of having to pay a 50% tax rate :-). A nice dividend following certification from the Grinch would be a terrific holiday treat next year.

I agree with Tarules. Shorts know they can hold pps down for next 15-18 months and create all kinds of strawmen in the process. Todays leadoff hitter was the Tilson 9a article to keep the thumb in our eye while shorts raped the pps to cover and lunch money. I cannot comprehend that this is acceptable to IOC leadership other than they think the rigs will do the talking for them (which I think will happen) but that doesn't shorten any time horizons.

What we have here is a failed rollout and the short narrative of low gas if any, not as much if there is any it won't be more than 5.4T's for .77 cents, or .60 cents etc etc. This deal was supposed to be announced as 1.29 uncapped and was a massive failure. In time it will be a proven resource at the high end of the range, how high remains to be seen but I think we will all be pleased.

The question becomes will you wait for it.

The answer to waiting is no. And I suspect neither will Chandler. And he really knows how to make money.

Richard, listen up mate.

I waited three years for Friday's event.  In all honesty, there's no reason to fefinitively conclude that any of those future positive catalysts will be received by the market any better than this deal was.  I say...maximize shareholder value...now.

I find it stunning that longs continue to focus on the next positive milesone for IOC. Do they not realize that the shorts are gearing up and preparing for the next positive IOC milestone? As long as they can bomb the tape with 2-5 million naked short shares, it doesn't matter what the metrics are. The share price can continue to be destroyed whenever it is necessary. Meanwhile, the shorts sell calls to the hopeful.

Only a buyout will get rid of the shorts PERIOD. How does is make sense to have an excess of 10 billion $ in gas and a market cap less than 3 $ billion?

RE: The Last Elephant in the Room - sfiaes - 12-11-2013

Different company today than is was 9 months ago. Transformational is not too strong a word. New management and a deal, with a "mega major" no less.

Before, the stock went up and down on fumes, rumors; a perfect environment for short selling. Going forward it will go up and down on results, drilling, farm ins etc.

The recurring mantra on this board has been "I believe in the resource". Well, if you still believe, now is an excellent time and price to buy the stock.
