Bit of a strong move vrom $16 to $21 in less than a week. Some profit taking seems to be in order as the stock isn't cheap. What is behind the move though?

InvenSense, Inc. (INVN), the leading provider of MotionTracking™ sensor system on chip (SoC) and Sounddevices, will showcase the company’s latest ‘AlwaysOn’ innovations for smartphones, tablets, wearables, and consumer electronics at the CES 2014 tradeshow. InvenSense’s ‘AlwaysOn’ solutions sense the environment and communicate motion and audio as a means for interacting with the Internet of Things (IoT). InvenSense will preview these technologies in booth #31407 of South Hall 3 at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 7-10, 2014.

InvenSense jumps; Northland sees wearables, OIS, CES as catalysts Dec 30 2013, 11:20 Northland's Tom Sepenzis is reiterating an Outperform and $20 PT on InvenSense (INVN +11.8%), while predicting wearable computing growth, rising Samsung penetration, CES and Mobile World Congress news flow, and the growing inclusion of optical image stabilization (OIS) within smartphones will act as 2014 catalysts.Like Piper's Gus Richard, Sepenzis highlights InvenSense's strong gyroscope design win activity at Samsung (a 30%+ customer). He also observes wearable devices such as smartwatches and heads-up displays often incorporate multiple MEMS motion sensors, and considers InvenSense to be "in the best position" to secure these design wins.InvenSense has already obtained design wins for Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch and the first version of Google Glass. But compared with high-volume smartphones and tablets, unit shipments for both products have been limited thus far. Glass' commercial launch is expected in early 2014.Short-covering is probably contributing to today's big gains. 35% of the float was shorted as of Dec. 13.

There are certain catalysts that will play a role in the future of the company. These catalysts are discussed in detail below.

InvenSense Inc (INVN): Like Android Or iOS, Buy InvenSense - Seeking Alpha

It's a fairly good overview article although we think now ($20+) isn't the best time to buy the shares. Wait for a sell-off, they are fairly expensive and fairly stretched.

Getting better at sub $19 now.

RE: INVN - admin - 03-17-2014

Shares of InvenSense (NYSE: INVN ) climbed Thursday on rumors that the MEMS maker has won the design in the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) iPhone 6. This would be the third time in three generations of iPhones that Apple switched suppliers after the company tapped Bosch over STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM ) for the accelerometer in the iPhone 5s (STMicroelectronics still won the gyroscope)...

To put that in perspective, Samsung shipped about 314 million smartphones last year. InvenSense claims that it took about 50% of Samsung's design wins -- about 157 million units. Additionally, Samsung accounts for about one-third of InvenSense's total revenue. So, if the iPhone rumors prove true, InvenSense could boost its revenue by another 20%.

This iPhone Rumor Could Mean Big Things for This Chipmaker (INVN)

Remains to be seen, these rumors have been there before..

The growing mobile device market offers enough interesting opportunities for InvenSense.

InvenSense rallies; Baird talks S5, iWatch opportunities • 11:16 AM

  • Baird has hiked its InvenSense (INVN +5.1%) PT to $28 from $23. The firm thinks InvenSense may be the sole motion sensor supplier for Samsung's Galaxy S5 (goes on sale next month), and considers Apple's oft-rumored iWatch a growth opportunity.
  • Shares slipped on Friday after Needham stated it "did not get the impression" during a talk with management that InvenSense scored an iPhone 6 optical image stabilization gyroscope design win.
  • Following today's gains, InvenSense is once more near its 52-week high of $23.92.

Some disappointment near-term but still upbeat for the year:

InvenSense Drops 14%: FYQ4 Revenue Beats, EPS Misses; Q1 Rev View Misses

By Tiernan Ray

Shares of sensor maker InvenSense (INVN) are down 49 cents, or 2.4%, at $20.10, after the company this afternoon reported fiscal Q4 revenue that slightly exceeded analysts’ estimates, and earnings per share that fell short of consensus, and forecast this quarter’s results lower as well.

Revenue in the three months ending in March rose almost 7%, year over year, to $59 million, yielding EPS of 7 cents.

Analysts had been modeling $57.4 million and 10 cents per share.

CEO Behrooz Abdi remarked that the company’s investments in the year are “now enabling us to make sizable market share gains in our core mobile market and to open up exciting businesses opportunities in emerging applications.”

Update: During the call, the company forecast revenue this quarter of $63 million to $66 million, with Samsung Electronics (005930KS) making up about “mid-30%” as a proportion of revenue, similar to past quarters. That is below analysts’ average estimate for $69.1 million this quarter.

EPS is seen in a range of 7 cents to 8 cents, well below the consensus for 16 cents per share.

For the full year, the company sees revenue rising by a range of 25% to 35%, which would be a little above the existing expectation for 29% revenue growth.

CFO Alan Krock remarked that this quarter, “we also have broader opportunities at new and existing mobile customers, some of which represent near-term market share gains, and others represent new inertial sensor, especially gyroscope attach rate opportunities.”

“We also expect new mobile market sensor application such as microphones and optical image stabilization to contribute to revenue growth, albeit with somewhat uncertain timing.”

Added Krock with respect to the full fiscal year, “This outlook opportunity includes incremental gyroscope-based market penetration and market share gains at high-end smartphone OEMs, generally consistent with prior years’ experience and it excludes the potential for accelerated growth in new market opportunities discussed such as audio, optical image stabilization, and consumer-electronics wearable devices.”

Shares have deepened their decline, now down $2.79, or almost 14%, at $17.80.

InvenSense closes higher after launching gyroscope for wearables • 6:55 PM

  • InvenSense (INVN +2.6%) claims its new ITG-3701 3-axis gyroscope delivers a full-scale range of +/- 4K degrees/second - 2x the range of typical gyroscopes.
  • The company argues the 3701's superior range "enables precise analysis of a golf or tennis racquet swing, soccer ball and basketball applications," among other things. That, in turn, makes it well-suited for the nascent wearables market.
  • InvenSense also claims unmatched power consumption, and an "industry first" height of just 0.75mm.
  • Wearables enthusiasm - boosted by Apple, Google, and Samsung's efforts - helped fuel InvenSense's big 2013/early 2014 rally. But near-term wearables shipments are expected to be well below smartphone shipments - IDC expects the latter to total 1.2B this year.

InvenSense buying motion-processing/positioning tech firms • 5:52 PM

  • InvenSense (INVN) is buying Movea, a French provider of algorithms and software for processing/analyzing motion and audio sensor data, and Trusted Positioning (TPI), a developer of software that improves location tracking by combining data from motion sensors and GPS/Wi-Fi networks. The company is paying a total of $81M ($75M in cash).
  • InvenSense declares pairing its motion sensors with Movea and TPI's technology will allow it to offer "intelligent" sensor SoCs supporting always-on location and activity tracking for mobile apps/services.
  • Movea has an IP portfolio featuring 100+ patent families, and calls itself "amongst the leading patent holders for motion sensor based functions." It offers motion-processing/data fusion libraries aimed at mobile devices, sports wearables, and living room gear. TPI, meanwhile, argues its software allows for positioning to work in areas where wireless signals are blocked.
  • Two weeks ago, voice processor vendor Audience (ADNC) announced it's buying Movea rival Sensor Platforms. The deals have implications for QuickLogic (QUIK), whose sensor hubs have relied on Sensor Platforms' algorithms and have some feature overlap with InvenSense's motion sensors.
  • SA authors have gone back and forth regarding the competitive threat posed by InvenSense to QuickLogic, with bulls having argued InvenSense is only a threat on the low-end.
  • Last fall, InvenSense bought Analog Devices' microphone unit for $100M+.

Explains the rally in a falling market today with a new 52 week high, but these shares are fully valued, IMHO:

  • Yes, smartphones and other wearables are great growth opportunities
  • But prices of the gyroscopes and other stuff are falling almost as fast, and Invensense has a habit of producing disappointing quarterly figures and the shares aren't cheap by any means.
