Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - Tree - 01-29-2013
Posted at 06:56 on 28 January, 2013 UTC A large landslide has occurred at the new Komo airfield in Papua New Guinea’s Hela province. An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 cubic metres of earth material slipped from an area of the airfield under construction earlier this month. No injuries have been reported. The airfield, which is nearing completion, is one of the major infrastructure developments linked to Exxon Mobil’s large Liquefied Natural Gas project in PNG. The area, in the resource-rich Highlands region, experiences a large amount of rainfall around this time of year. The landslide occurred near the site of a massive landslide in Tumbi that buried a village and killed at least 25 people in January last year. The Tumbi landslide was linked by some local communities in Hela to a nearby quarry used for the LNG Project although Exxon and its project partners deny that the quarry operations caused the landslide. RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - ArtM72 - 01-29-2013 Don't they need this airfield to bring in essential equipment for their CSP and NG compressor/pumping stations? Seems to me we heard delayed completion of that airfield was already impacting their project timeline. This can't help. So far anyway it seems Gulf Province has avoided heavy rainfall problems experienced this year to theie east and their west. Sitting on the (relatively) protected leeward side of the mountains? From OSH:
..."In addition, the company reported that the PNG liquefied natural gas project, which is partnered and operated by ExxonMobil subsidiary Esso Highlands, was about 70% complete and on track for first LNG sales in 2014.
“A number of major pieces of project infrastructure are now at, or nearing, completion, with the remainder of works progressing generally in line with schedule,” Oil Search managing director Peter Botten said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Importantly, runway pavement at the Komo airfield is progressing well and first cargo flights, which will bring in key items of equipment for the construction of the Hides Gas Conditioning Plant (HGCP), are planned to commence in early 2013,” he added."...
RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - ArtM72 - 01-30-2013 Great photo. Haven't seen anymore about the landslide, but a few thousand cubic meters isn't a lot of dirt. 30m x 10m x 10 m. The question is where along the runway did it occur; Was it in a section that could be considered typical for other sections of the runway leaving the geotechs in other areas suspect? Heavy aircraft require thick concrete with a solid sub-base. If the soils used for the runway are marginal the durability of the airfield will be quickly compromised by heavy aircraft. Time will tell. RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - sageo - 01-30-2013

Sure would love to see it.If you can't,thanks anyway. Regards, sageo. RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - Tree - 01-30-2013

That was quick .As an old guy (very old) who wasn't raised in this technology (fast) age,I'm impressed with what you guys on the board(and my children and grandchildren) can do and how quickly you are able to do it. I consider myself very lucky to be in with such a group (SHU) of folks.(BOBs). Thank you again, and all the others, who unselfishly contribute their thoughts and hard work to make SHU a success.GL,Sa. RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - Spartina - 01-30-2013 Agree Sageo, great board, great posts as a friend of mine says - together we are styronger (smile). Boy Tree those pictures of the png lng plant and csp got me thinking too - might the gov't have held things back for Exxon's sake. All that work and construction and not enough gas. Really not in the best interest of PNG to have 2 lng plants but only enough gas for one... RE: Large Landslide at PNG LNG Komo Airfield - petrengr1 - 01-30-2013
