Where the Wild Things Grow

The Pay

Once again Interoil (NYSE-IOC) has announced some knock out numbers. I am not an expert on oil and gas by any stretch of the imagination, but I can tell a big number from a small number. Even my knuckle dragging, mouth breathing broker friends can often tell the difference.

So lots of companies report on this “net feet of pay” business. It sounds very exciting doesn’t it? I imagine it’s like someone has laid money out on the floor for me to roll in and collect. Wow! 150 feet of pay! I was expecting to find a heavy duty technical description, but put simply “net feet of pay” means hydrocarbon saturated interval.

Why is Interoil special? This is a company working successfully in one of the most difficult countries for exploration and operations on the planet. But as I’ve said in previous blogs, PNG is “Where the Wild Things Are”. Massively rich deposits owned and pursued by the biggest companies in the world. (Yes as big as Apple)

Here are some recent announcements by other oil and gas companies referring to net feet of pay:

Gran Tierra Energy Spikes 9% After-hours on Updated Drilling Programs in Peru, Columbia

Chevron Announces Further Natural Gas Discovery Offshore Australia

W&T Offshore announces positive results in its Yellow Rose drilling program

These press releases (including Chevron) are shouting about between 50 and 250 feet of net pay.

Which planet does Interoil come from? Look at these results

Let’s not forget that Interoil’s Antelope 1 and 2 wells also hold the Guinness Book World Record for highest flowing natural gas on the planet.

The Catalyst

The company’s last press release also said outright “InterOil announced that it has advised bidders with which the Company has been in discussions that the final binding bid solicitation period for the partnering process currently being undertaken will close on February 28, 2013.”

Here’s a great article that dives more deeply into the history and potential buyout candidates:

Interoil Asset Sell Down or 100% Takeover?

There’s a fairly large short position on IOC as well. As we get to month end, this group has to be getting nervous.

So here we go. The world’s angriest natural gas wells, coupled with the largest feet of pay numbers I can find on the Interweb, with a plainly announced major catalyst happening by month end. No wonder the stock is climbing. One of my genius broker friends might even tell me to buy some!

Disclaimer: I own no shares or options of InterOil personally, through my family, my company, or any sneaky nominees. I have not been paid for this message personally or through my company. I wrote this because I think it’s an interesting story. This is not a recommendation to buy securities, consult your genius investment advisor before making any trading decisions.
