Santa O'Neill is coming to Kerema.... - Palm - 03-04-2013 On his visit to Gulf Province last week Oneill was "making it rain". He made it clear that Kerema will be developed over the next 5 years and started by giving several checks to Kavo in the presense of "huge crowds" for roads, schools, repaving of the Kerema airport and more. He also challenged and demanded that Gulf public servants step up and do their jobs (this was in another article). The Gulf LNG project and others will be key.

The people of Gulf province have received an estimated K20 million over and above the normal budget allocation for the province.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill who made commitments to the Gulf people in a recent visit to the province 12 months ago presented about K20 million for various projects in Kerema and Kikori districts during his two-day visit to Gulf province at the end of last week.
Mr O’Neill told huge crowds at both districts he visited that the Gulf provincial government will receive K100 million over the next five years that is K200 million on top of the normal budget support it gets for education, health, law and order and all other government services.
“So if you tell me that you cannot develop Gulf in fives years time, than I am sorry we are doing something very wrong. The challenge is on us, that is why I am here to give our commitment that this government stands with you in making sure we make a difference in our people’s lives,” Mr O’Neill said.
Prime Minister O’Neill then presented to Gulf Governor Havila Kavo several cheques including K2 million of the K5 million for the Kerema town road sealing, K2 million for the renovation of the Kerema hospital, K2 million for Kerema high school renovation, and K2 million of the total K10 million for the Kerema Kaintiba road to start work.
Mr O’Neill said another K5 million is ready for the sealing of Kerema airport which will be done by the same company sealing the Kerema town road.
The Prime Minister said Kikori MP and Industrial Relations Minister Mark Maipakai had requested for K1 million to clear two vessels.
The Prime Minister handed the Minister K1 million to clear customs and IRC before the boats are released.
Mr O’Neill on his visit to Kikori last Thursday gave K1 million for Kikori High School, K1 million for a health centre and K1 million for a rural electricity program.
Minister Maipakai in receiving the cheque said the money will be used to buy solar panels for health centres and classrooms so that teachers and health workers can work at night.
