"Potape replaced William Duma in June this year amidst accusations that Duma had put private interests before national ones, but Duma was later re-instated by O'Neill."

Duma corrupted by Shell bribe. Canned and replaced with Potape by Somare successor Abal. Duma chosen by O'Neill as Potape was a loyalist to Somare. As jonleba summed it up, Potape will do as Somare wishes. O'Neill had not the legitimacy to order Duma as Duma no doubt was trying to outlast O'Neill. Duma rolled dice with being back with Somare and lost. Likely O'Neill is the logjam at this point. What's next?

Somare returns as PNG leader

Political chaos has returned in gas-rich Papua New Guinea where Sir Michael Somare has been reinstated as Prime Minister following a Supreme Court ruling that Peter O'Neill's leadership was illegal.

Somare was sworn in today by the PNG Governor-General Michael Ogio, and Somare has already named a cabinet with Francis Potape installed as Minister for Petroleum and Energy, according to local media reports.

The Supreme Court reportedly ruled on Monday that Peter O'Neill's government was unconstitutionally formed, leaving the decision with the Governor General.

MPs had voted to replace Somare with O'Neill in August because Somare had been absent for five months while in Singapore recovering from heart surgery.

Potape replaced William Duma in June this year amidst accusations that Duma had put private interests before national ones, but Duma was later re-instated by O'Neill.

Somare has had a long career in PNG politics, having served as Prime Minister for 16 years since 1975, and previously serving as a key member of the nation's independence movement.

It is time for O'Neill to take the martyrs way out and fold. I have always felt Duma and Polye were the brains, O'Neill politically inept. He means well, that doesn't cut in a corrupt world. Duma is a lawyer, he knows the constitution. He counted the votes and he knew that in the end with the SC Justice's loyalties to Somare, Somare would prevail. O'Neil blew it when he started to go after the crooked politicos such as Artie S. and others, but backed off. The blackmail against the Somares could have worked, but no one had the guts to pull it off. Now O'Neill should have Sir Rabbie work a peace treaty, stating that for the good and welfare of the peoples of PNG I will step down and persue my ideals by running for PM in the upcoming election. Once the first person is shot O'Neill's political career is over. Polye or Duma will then take his place on the ballot.

I agree jonleba. Interesting though the piece put out by RJ this AM. Mention that GJ has ultimate authority. GJ swore Somare in, then parliament canned GJ and will appoint new one. Good piece by them and they say in end, it does not matter who PM is for IOC. "They have no dog in the fight."

I also feel O'Neill should step aside and let the process happen. Elections are in a few months and he would be better garnering support through a campaign then looking like a reckless and insubordinate public official. He will lose points at home and abroad.
