Lucrative PNG deal for Wood

By Josh Lewis 26 July 2013 00:00 GMT

Wood Group PSN has secured a contract to provide engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services for ExxonMobil’s liquefied natural gas operations in Papua New Guinea, writes Josh Lewis.
It is understood that Wood Group beat competition from WorleyParsons and Clough-Amec to secure the lucrative support role.

While no specific value was given for the five-year deal, a Wood Group spokesperson told Upstream that it was estimated to be in the range of between A$500 million and A$750 million (US$463.2 million and US$694.17 million).

The spokesperson added that the contract carried options for two extensions of two years, and that 500 personnel would be needed to service the contract, due to start on 1 August.

Under the deal, Wood Group will provide brownfield engineering and procurement support to ExxonMobil’s operations in PNG, including building and maintenance services on the Hides gas conditioning plant in the highlands and the PNG LNG plant north-west of Port Morseby.

ExxonMobil operates the PNG LNG project, which includes the building of a two-train processing plant, with a capacity of 6.9 milllion tonnes per annum, with first gas due next year.

ExxonMobil is also looking at expansion options for PNG LNG through a third, and possibly a fourth, liquefaction train.

ExxonMobil is progressing with plans to develop its own P’nyang gas field as a supply source for the potential third train, while feedstock for a fourth unit could be supplied from Interoil’s Elk-Antelope field if talks between the duo end in a deal that would see the US supermajor acquire access to 4.6 trillion cubic feet of gas from the field pair.

The US supermajor holds a 33.2% stake in the project. It is partnered by Oil Search on 29%, PNG government company Independent Public Business Corporation on 16.6%, Santos on 13.5%, Nippon Oil on 4.7%, PNG’s Mineral Resources Development Company on 2.8% and PNG national oil company Petromin on 0.2%.

I had finally been talked out of believing this could be a possibility.

They are playing with my mind I tell you ..... Ugghhhhhhh!!!!!!!,  it is a communist plot.......

Seriously, is that still a posibility? or just lack of understanding by the writer of the article?

I would say the writer really doesn't know which is for which. Does it really matter? The bottom line is relative certainty of enough gas for another train at E/A, and not yet at P'nyang.

The price action may be tame, but, the volume is looking strong for a "summer doldrums day"....
