If you were short, why wouldn't you cover? - Optionray - 11-02-2013

Or, put another way, what do you think is the shorts greatest arguments?

Company overvalued?

No gas?

No expected deal?

Govt Issues/corruption?

Significant Market correction expected soon?

Other

It's not often I disagree with you, but in this case I do.  I think the concensus of this pole will be very informative.  Additionally, I believe there are quite a few people wondering what the reasons are that the price isn't starting to appreciate as we get closer to a deal.  I'm completely sold on IOC but it's obvious there are quite a few people who are not.  And by looking at and evaluating some of these perspectives as to why we are not seeing a strong PPS as we get closer to a deal, that will allow everyone to make better decisions regarding their hedging positions or how they are currently positioned for any runup.

Maybe the answer could be #6 ....(other) ."because they know somethig we don't" ?

Sageo:

There's no way that the insidious Inglorious Basterds who have been shorting IOC know anything more than the rest of us.

It seems their last hope is that there will be no deal because there hasn't been one yet

AND ...

If there is a deal it won't support a PPS any higher than current.

Up until now the Shorts have gotten away with their strategy because many MANY Longs have been complicit in the past few years; they found it lucrative to loan their shares in abundance.

When the deal comes before the end of December, will the Longs all recall a major portion of their loaned-out shares in concert and cause a massive squeeze??
IOC top management is counting on it ... are they right or is it wishful thinking?
Time will tell.

If the shorts are hedged with multiple accounts, some long, some short, and are properly positioned with options, there is no need to cover. Good for tax planning as well.

Meanwhile, they can profit from options and running the pps up and down a bit as they have been doing. Notice that the mean pps is climbing though.

I believe they know a good deal or two, maybe even three, are coming noos and have been positioned for same for some time. Just MHO.
