JAPANESE Ambassador Hiroharu Iwasaki last Thursday hosted a reception to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Emperor of Japan in Port Moresby.
The birthday of Emperor Akihito is on Dec 23 but considering the convenience of the guests, the Embassy held the occasion on Dec 12.
In his official speech, Iwasaki thanked the Papua New Guinea Government and the international community who helped Japan during the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
“After receiving heartwarming voice of support from the world, we Japanese, realised again the importance of mutual help and people to people network,” Iwasaki said.
“That was the reason why our prime minister then titled his gratitude message ‘Kizuna’ which means a bond among people.
“Now Japan is steadily recovering from the disaster and the economy has shown strong signs of recovery as well,” Iwasaki said.
He said Japan was continuing a dialogue with PNG in implementing key infrastructure projects such as the road maintenance, Ramu transmission system reinforcement projects and education.
“A sewage project and a waste management project are simultaneously ongoing in the city of Port Moresby through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
More than 30 JICA volunteers are currently performing duties in various fields of the government and local communities of PNG.
“The Japanese government last month approved the investment promotion protection agreement between PNG and Japan and the diplomatic documents for the activation of the agreement will be exchanged soon,” Iwasaki said.
Moreover, Japan intends to expand its economic relationship in other areas such as LNG related industries, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism amongst others for the long term development strategy,” he said.
