Indonesian SOEs eye PNG
INDONESIAN state-owned enterprises are looking east to Papua New Guinea in great numbers to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the Pacific nation.
Among the SOEs expanding their reach to PNG are energy company Pertamina, telecommunications provider Telekomunikasi Indonesia, electricity supplier Perusahaan Listrik Negara and airline Garuda Indonesia.
Garuda recently announced plans to open a route connecting Port Moresby and Bali, while Pertamina and Telkom on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with their PNG counterparts in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Pertamina and PNG National Petroleum Company signed an agreement to explore oil and gas opportunities together.
“It will give us access to PNG’s seismic information,” said Afdal Bahaudin, Pertamina’s director of investment planning and risk management.
The MOU will allow PNPC to learn about the operation and development of liquefied natural gas projects, chairman Frank Kramer said.
“Indonesia has over 30 years of experience in the operation of LNG plants,” he said.
Badak NGL operates East Kalimantan’s Bontang LNG plant, Indonesia’s oldest.
“Exxonmobil is currently developing an LNG plant in PNG which would be the country’s first,” Mr Kramer said, adding that the Pacific country holds some 25 trillion cubic feet in natural gas reserves.
Telkom signed its MOU with state-owned TelikomPNG.
Arief Yahya, president director of Telkom, said the Bandung-based company has agreed to extend its fiber optics network from the Indonesian province of Papua to PNG.
“The scheme of cooperation still needs to be discussed further, but basically we will build the infrastructure, for which we will receive a fee,” he said.
Telkom is keen to enter the mobile-phone market in PNG, where only half of the country’s 7 million population use mobile phones.
Telkom is currently building a fiber optic network in Indonesia’s Papua that will cost some Rp 700 billion, Arief said.
On the electricity front, PLN president director Nur Pamudji said the company will soon export electricity to areas in PNG near the Indonesian border. He said the amount would be “not much, only 2 megawatts,” and was an effort to seek friendship rather than revenue.
State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan said PNG recorded robust recent growth in gross domestic product, encouraging the expansion of Indonesian SOEs. “Their GDP growth was about 9 percent,” he added.
PNG’s economy last year stood at $16.9 billion, following a five-year annual compound growth rate of 7.3 percent. With GDP per capita at $2,532, the average person engages in significantly less economic activity than their counterpart in Indonesia, where GDP per capita stood at $4,666.
PNG has recently undergone some political instability following claims on government leadership positions by rival candidates. The country is a significant recipient of foreign aid.

You mean Pertimina has LNG operating oh my gosh who would have thought.!!Geez .
A leeeetle one named Arun might ring a bell. This is sounding more and more like a boot to the zebra's arse. Better get my work done quickly. Hohoho
Note that Frank Kramer is fully engaged now as head of NPCP. He will be a huge asset to PNG in that position as opposed to Kalinoe who is being shipped off to a life of downing Heiniken. Not all bad, but not what he planned on a few years ago.

Gotta love this line also: "On the electricity front, PLN president director Nur Pamudji said the company will soon export electricity to areas in PNG near the Indonesian border. He said the amount would be “not much, only 2 megawatts,” and was an effort to seek friendship rather than revenue." Just say it plainly. "We will bring you electricity to the border area very quickly and we'll just not worry much about getting paid. What?!! You have lots of natural gas and liquids? And we need THAT. I'm sure we can work SOMETHING out. Lets get started."

A bit more direct - LNG. Pertamina basically helped create the LNG industry and their main customers were in North Asia, aka JP/SK. **********
Indonesia, PNG explore cooperation in LNG
Indonesian State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina and its Papua New Guinea (PNG) counterpart, National Petroleum Company Papua New Guinea (NPCP),agreed on Tuesday to explore business cooperations in the oil and gas sector. In the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in Jakarta, the two companies agreed to conduct studies as well as to look for business partnerships. Pertamina president director Karen Agustiawan said the company intended to offer its research centers as well as seismic interpretation abilities. While NPCP chairman Frank Kramer said his company wanted to form a long-term relationship with the Indonesian government through Pertamina. “We think there’s a lot of relevance beaconing, with [Pertamina’s] more than 50 years in LNG,” he said. Kramer said that NPCP might also help Pertamina develop Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) sources in geologically challenged areas. NPCP would be open to sharing seismic data with Pertamina in the future when the opportunity arises, added Kramer. NPCP is currently constructing a US$20 billion LNG project with Exxonmobil, according to Kramer. “As of right now, it is 85-90 percent complete. But there will be a third train, a fourth train, and a fifth train,” Kramer said. (And whose gas will enable those trains?) PNG Prime Minister Peter O’neill expects his country’s GDP to double by 2015 due to development of LNG, where 2011 figures show PNG GDP at $12.93 billion.
Hohoho. O'Neill is the right guy at the right time. He knows that the time to strike is now and by getting all these bigs in the same arena the battle for supremacy and bringing assets to market will be fierce. 5 trains and only one company currently has the resources to make it happen. But don't fart around too long Exxon. There's a new big in town.
Kramer is pretty straightforward. They seem to have confidence that 5 trains there will be.
