As always, we SHU dorks come to you with all drilling & reservoir-related questions when IOC does not elaborate fully.

Here's a question for y'all:

Hession's opening remarks in the recent Conference Call were: "The testing also shows a world‐class multi‐darcy reservoir with strong deliverability, which will favourably affect the number of wells needed for production."

As a dopey Chemical Engineer I know what Darcy's Law is ... BUT what is a multi-darcy reservoir?????

It sounds like one of Martha Stewart's "GOOD THINGS" but just how good would that be relative to other gas resources around the world? AS I understand, Kitimat LNG in Canada will need over 1,200 wells if they have 15 TCF gas available.

Stavros- As you know Darcy's law is about the measurement of permeability i.e. the ability of a formation to allow fluids (gas, water, oil) to flow through the formation. As I recall a formation with a permeability of 100 millidarcies will allow some flow of fluids. Most formations have a permeability measured in the low hundreds of millidarcies.  A thousand millidarcies is one Darcy. A permeability of one Darcy is very rare and might occur in a very high porsity, possibly unconsolidated, sandstone. A solid low porosity limestone would have almost no permeabililty.  Fractures have very high permeability. A multi-Darcy formation is almost never seen. A formation that will produce 60 MMCFD with a drawdown of 2 psi is fantastic and verging on the unbelievable. I do believe it but it must be due to many fractures and a very long producing interval. I assume they are producing the entire pay section through an open hole. That would allow maximum flow potential. As I said in an earlier post it is almost like producing from a cavern when you can produce 60 MMCFD with only 2 psi of drawdown. We must have some pretty good porosity and many fractures for the well to be able produce at that rate and pressure drawdown. As Hession and his experts have said "I have never seen anything like this". Multi-Darcy permeability is fantastic.

Pet - Thanks for your superb explanation for Stavros .Very clear and informative . " A multi-Darcy formation is almost never seen"......right on !  If the old memory serves me correctly, it was a lady engineer on the site with Hession and others who stated " I have never seen anything like this". I believe she was one of the experts on the site when the test was being conducted .  Your " multi- Darcy permeability is fantastic" tells it all.  In future years when the history of PNG's prl 15 is written, the total number for tcfs will be outstanding. The current pps doesn't show it now, but(can't use "soon" anymore) just wait ! [ ....don't believe we will be a "bridesmaid" forever ...but "  only the shawdow knows" ]. My best to you,sir.

 Stavros - A "dopey" CE you are not ! Anyone with your skills and residing in the part of the world where you do,has a "view" of many things that us "good old country boys" are not exposed to.[ There I go again.....ending with a preposition ! ] . I echo Pet's thoughts on your question concerning a multi-Darcy reservoir. When I first talked about an Ant 7 well to the west at Anteope some time ago, Pet very wisely stated that it would take 2 or 3 more wells in that area to truly define that part of the field. On your "GOOD THINGS" .....less wells with greater production translates to "lower cost for much more volume". PS ...when you have time,re-read Pet's recent comments on Ant 4 . Maybe in early October,OSH will be able to give us an update on it. Good day to you,sir.
