Battle for a stake in PNG's Interoil heats up with Exxon outbidding Oilsearch

Global oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil has launched a US$3 billion bid for Papua New Guinea-based gas explorer Interoil, as it seeks to take control of the country's second LNG venture in the Gulf of Papua off Port Moresby.

The bid trumps a US$2.2 billion dollar offer by Oilsearch in May, that was supported by French group Total.

To add a little extra spice in the takeover battle, Oilsearch is Exxon's junior partner in the existing LNG project in the PNG Highlands and Andrew Wilkins, publishing director of Business Advantage International says that battle is likely to bring more benefits to PNG in the future.

Of particular note is that TOTAL is never mentioned
