Canada’s Pacific Rubiales has flatly denied a claim by former Venezuelan vice president Jose Vicente Rangel that the explorer had a role in an alleged warplanes deal made by the Venezuelan opposition.

The Toronto-listed explorer said that it was breaking “a general policy not to comment on market or media rumours” in order to “formally respond to completely untrue media reports published in Colombia”.

Pacific Rubiales was referring to a claim made by Rangel on his Sunday television programme, Jose Vicente Hoy, and repeated by several Colombian and Venezuelan newspapers on Monday.

The explorer said the claim in the articles that “Pacific Rubiales is involved in a politically motivated plot against the Venezuelan government...are absurd and have no factual basis”.

“Pacific Rubiales categorically denies these reports and any involvement in these untrue allegations,” the company said, adding that it “holds itself to the highest standards of corporate governance”.

The Canadian-incorporated, Latin America-focused outfit holds exploration, production and development assets in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Guyana and Papua New Guinea.

On his programme, Rangel said that the conservative opposition in Venezuela had met executives from a US arms company in San Antonio, Texas to complete the warplane purchase, according to a translation from Venezuelananalysis.com.

“They [opposition politicians] looked through some catalogues and chose a certain model. They signed a sales contract for 18 planes that at the beginning of November at the latest will be taken to a US military base in Colombia,” said Rangel.

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who lost an election for the Venezuelan presidency to Nicolas Maduro earlier this year, called the claim a “good joke” on Twitter and accused Rangel of having a “dark and twisted mind”.

83-year-old Rangel, himself an unsuccessful Venezuelan presidential candidate on three occasions in the 1970s and 1980s, held several ministries in former president Hugo Chavez’s government from 2002 to 2007, culminating with the vice presidency.
