NQ Mobile Gains 7% as Cisco Buys Sourcefire

NQ Mobile’s (NQ) stock has jumped 6.9% to $12.00 today, and the Chinese online-security firm’s shares are up 53% during the last month.

There was a bit of company specific news today, as NQ announced that one of its subsidiaries, Beijing Feiliu Jiutian Technology, had signed a deal with Baidu (BIDU) to distribute a mobile game, “The Martial Arts Champion.” I may be wrong, but I doubt that’s the reason for stock’s pop.

Instead, look at what’s happened to shares of online-security companies today, following the acquisition of Sourcefire (FIRE) byCisco Systems (CSCO). Shares of Fortinet (FTNT), for one, have gained 4.1%. (Check Point Software Technologies (CHKP) has dropped 1% and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) has dipped 0.4%, however).

I wouldn’t be surprised if NQ is rallying on the Sourcefire acquisition. As my colleague Tiernan Ray noted earlier, at least one analyst called the takeover “game changing” for the industry, and expects more consolidation in the future.

And NQ could be a target, at least if this Seeking Alpha post can be believed. And while I appreciate irony of U.S. internet users getting their security from a Chinese firm, NQ’s mobile-security software is already being used by U.S. Cellular.

And why not? China’s hacking U.S. computers; the U.S. is hacking China; and the U.S. is reading the emails of Americans and foreigners alike.

In this day and age, we can all use a little more security.

Hmm, yet another cylinder from which to fire, this is getting comical. But then again, so is the level of undervaluation..

Superseded (a correction of sorts) by another Barron's article today:

NQ Mobile Jumps 3%: Security and Gaming in One Package

By Ben Levisohn

Yesterday, I speculated that NQ Mobile’s (NQ) 7.6% pop was likely due to Cisco’s (CSCO) acquisition of Sourcefire (FIRE), rather than its mobile-game distribution deal with Baidu (BIDU).

The gaming deal may be more important than I gave it credit for. Canaccord Genuity’s T. Michael Walkley, Matthew Ramsay and Siddharth Sinha explain:

NQ Mobile subsidiary FL Mobile announced a strategic agreement to publish one of its leading mobile games through Baidu DuoKu on the Android platform in China. Given the very strong Android smartphone market share in China, we believe this agreement significantly expands the addressable market for FL Mobile-developed games. Further, we believe FL Mobile is well positioned to leverage its status as the leading Chinese publisher on the iOS platform to expand its presence in international markets. As such, we believe FL Mobile’s growing distribution pipeline and broadening games portfolio should accelerate NQ Mobile’s transition from a mobile security to a mobile application and platform company with multiple growth drivers.

The analysts reiterated their Buy rating and $17 price target for the stock.

Whatever the reason, NQ continues to trade higher today. It shares have gained 2.9% to $12.43 today, and are up 54% in July alone.
