InterOil appoints former Woodside man Hession as chief executive

InterOil has been rejuvenating its executive management and board of directors in recent months, and has just appointed a new chief executive whose previous experience in liquefied natural gas will be invaluable as the company seeks to close out the ExxonMobil deal, and subsequent ones, based on its Elk-Antelope gas resource.

The new chief executive Michael Hession was most recently an executive of Woodside Petroleum where he headed up the Browse LNG development and had a high-profile role on the Pluto LNG project.

Hession also had big project experience when he was employed by BP including working on the giant Azeri- Chirag-Guneshli development in Azerbaijan, said InterOil.

He replaces InterOil’s founding chief executive Phil Mulacek who retired. Hession said: “InterOil is at an inflection point in its history, and I expect that it will start to realise the value that it has carefully built over the past 16 years. The certified resource at the Elk and Antelope fields is sufficient for a multi-train development which could include the PNG LNG facility, and/or an LNG facility in the Gulf Province.

“The monetisation of PRL 15 is anticipated to be a transformational event for InterOil,” said Hession. “The interest in energy development in PNG has never been greater and we expect to bring in additional partners to accelerate our activities.

“I welcome the opportunity to join such an outstanding company and be a part of its bright future.

“There is much work to be done and great opportunity ahead of us,” added Hession.
