Playing it Cool over 'substantial' Rap-1

Joint venture partners InterOil and Pacific Rubiales Energy have hit a substantial hydrocarbon column with an exploration prospect in Papua New Guinea, writes Russell Searancke.

The Raptor-1 well flared gas and condensate during an initial open hole test carried out over a 330-metre total interval, containing about 200 metres of Kapau limestone.

The discovery will be appraised through additional seismic, followed by appraisal drilling and comprehensive long-term testing next year, added InterOil, which downplayed an analyst’s suggestion that Raptor-1 was a 10 trillion cubic foot discovery.

“You can’t say that you’ve got 10 Tcf on the basis of one well and we’re not prepared to say that,” said InterOil chief executive Michael Hession.

“What we want to do is, as we work through it, when we have something material or we have some real understanding of the size of what we’ve got, we will disclose it to the market at the appropriate time.” However, the well did indicate the possible presence of what was described as a substantial volume of liquids which “offers game-changing potential and could accelerate monetisation relative to gas”, added the Canadian independent.

Raptor-1 sits in Block PPL 475 and is 12 kilometres west of the Elk-Antelope resource.

InterOil holds a 65.2% operator interest, while Pacific Rubiales holds 12.9% and minority interests hold 21.9%.

So we have 200 meters of limestone ok but we tested 330 meters . So was the non limestone testing area liquids???

I have heard that the rig IOC has at Raptor is not capable of digging deep enough to get down to the liquids (aka Black Gold), and that is why it will be moved and a new one will be brought in. As a a layman in regard to oil and gas drilling this makes no sense to me that you have a rig that can drill down many thousands of feet, yet it can't go a few hundred more feet or so lower. However, that was what I was told. U or F.

The size of the field was 9.5 kilometers long PET said I think and is the height of the liquid column 130 meters ?...?.sounds substantial to this novice . Am I right ?....?.

The 130 meters below the limestone is shale. No oil, no gas, no water,...just shale.

Is it possible the use of downhole seismics first revealed the limestone formation below the well but because they were already moving the rig there was no opportunity to drill further?

Of course, as you have pointed out the lines and coloring on page 16 of the 3Q14CC presentation are interpretive.  If correct they would have had to get through another 200m of Orubadi, which I suppose may not have been so much a case of a drilling rig inadequacy as a need for casing to the lower level which they were not prepared to do.  That would make a little more sense.

So many questions, so little information.
