Shell restructuring/New York Times today
#2
Less than a month on the job and the new guy is moving goal posts all around the world. They said they would drill offshore Alaska and didn't anticipate that there might be opposition to that. Plus he obviously is quoted as saying any drilling is out for 2014 (that means through Dec 31) even should things change in the next couple of months. This likely carries over to Canada also. Several O&G companies (including Shell) have said they are pursuing projects there even though there is a lot of opposition to projects there. Then this new Shell guy has to admit that things didn't go as planned in French Guiana, Nigeria and even in the US shale. They make plans, announce them with all kinds of fanfare, but then something goes wrong and they not only move goal posts, but build new longer fields with portable goal posts.

Or maybe that's the nature of this industry when you are only in control of so much. The best thing would be to make no plans and not hold any conference calls (but that's illegal), or not state what projections, goals or hopes are. The industry should just be taken over by the United Nations. Thos guys always get it right.
