RDS beats out 10 for 3 LNG Stakes

29 January, 2013
Shell will beat off competition from GDF Suez, Gaprom and others to land the LNG assets of Spanish oil giant Repsol, according to a report.

The board of Repsol are likely to confirm Shell as the preferred buyer of a raft of international assets during a meeting on Wednesday, Spanish newspaper Cinco Dias claimed on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources close to the deal.

French media reported in early December that GDF Suez was on the verge of landing the assets in Peru, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago.

The company said in the Summer that it will sell assets in Canada where it controls 75% of the Canaport LNG terminal, its 20% stake and sole off-taker position in the 4.4 million tonnes per annum Peru LNG, and its shareholding in Trinidad and Tobago’s Atlantic LNG.

Repsol also controls a number of LNG carriers and holds a stake in a Spanish LNG import terminal.

The aim is to help finance investment of €19 billion ($23.3 billion) set in its 2012-2016 business plan to boost the company’s oil and gas production. The company’s liquefied petroleum gas interests in Chile is also part of the programme

Around 10 companies immediately put themselves forward as possible suitors. In July the government of Trinidad & Tobago said it would consider buying Repsol’s stake in the Atlantic LNG plant. In September, Gail India was eying the Spanish company’s LNG assets, in particular its Canaport LNG terminal in Canada.

The company is a shareholder and sole off-taker at Peru LNG, where most volumes are committed to the Manzanillo LNG terminal in Mexico.

It also controls the Canaport LNG import terminal on Canada’s east coast and has an equity and off-take position at the Atlantic LNG production plant in Trinidad and Tobago

Message to those who did not win the bidding: Step up your efforts elsewhere. You are dismissed from the Repsol table.

'Out yourself'  Good choice of words Freddie.   With the way it was reported how Shell dealt with the competition in the first sentence I'd say they are going to keep it to themselves.

Interesting choice of words; could be taken a couple of ways. Never heard it said that a company "beat off" the competition. If only Tree saw that comment. Wait a minute....
