PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has called on Papua New Guineans to vote wisely when the nation goes to the poll tomorrow.
In his message to the nation relayed to The National over the phone from Tari, Southern Highlands province, yesterday where he raised the new Hela province flag, the prime minister also paid tribute to all stakeholders who had assisted in seeing the smooth progress of the election process since the writs were issued on May 18.
He made special mention of the security forces, PNG Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen and his staff and volunteers, members of parliament, community leaders and the people of Papua New Guinea.
‘’PNG is at the crossroads.
“As voters, you have the opportunity now to choose leaders to build on the foundations I have laid in 10 months.
“We cannot vote for candidates who will lead us back to the years of waste and mismanagement.
‘’The campaign period has given you the opportunity to assess candidates and political parties and what they stand for.
“Papua New Guinea is at the crossroads.
“It is up to you now. The power is in your hands when you vote. Do it wisely, and with our future in mind.”
Polling will begin in some parts of the country tomorrow and is scheduled to end on July 6. Counting will proceed with the writs to be returned on or before July 27.
In commenting the security forces for an excellent job so far in ensuring peace, O’Neill said: “I am confident they will continue this over the voting period.
“I urge everyone to cooperate with them to ensure a successful outcome.
“We must also thank and recognise the continuous assistance provided to us by our closest neighbours, Australia and New Zealand, especially with additional funding and logistics support,” O’Neill said.
He said with PNG poised to enter a period of unprecedented economic boom, led by the PNG LNG project, revenue from this project was expected to double the country’s GDP growth.
“A second LNG project in the Gulf province, being developed by InterOil, is progressing well.
“Production is expected to start soon in a number of world class mines in the country, including Ramu nickel, Yandera, Wafi and Hidden Valley mine.
“In the coming years, revenue inflow from the export of gas and minerals will be phenomenal. What the country needs is leaders who can manage this wealth well, not squander it.
“The challenge for our people now is to elect the right leaders at the polls,” the prime minister said.
He said despite the 10 years of continuous economic growth and high commodity prices, “our education and health facilities have deteriorated with our roads, bridges and wharves stand neglected”.
“All past governments have failed us.
“As we march forward to the polling booth starting tomorrow, we must think about the kind of future that we want for ourselves, our children and their children.
“That is why I am asking Papua New Guineans to think and
vote wisely this election,” O’Neill said."
