This doesn't tell us much yet except O'Neill may have coattails this election. Last day for polling is tomorrow, however, expect extensions by likely at least a few days in several districts.

Voting gets underway in remote PNG as deadline looms

Voting in Papua New Guinea’s general election is due to finally get underway in some parts of the country despite today being the end of the originally scheduled official polling period.
The Electoral Commission says most of the polling has finished across the country but weather conditions in particular have frustrated attempts to land electoral teams and equipment into remote parts.
Johnny Bllades reports
“The Commission says polling will have to be extended by two or three days. The delays began early in the two-week polling period officially allocated for this election. Due to security concerns and the lateness of polling booths being set up, the first provinces to go to voting, such as Southern Highlands and Hela, were given extra days for polling. The hold-ups have been contagious and bad weather has compounded the logistical difficulties of moving polling across PNG. Among the provinces expected to begin voting today are Chimbu province and Eastern Highlands province. Polling is also being extended in parts of Bougainville and Western Province.”
Meanwhile, a sitting Member of Parliament has been arrested for allegedly handing out cash to voters before polling began in the new Jiwaka Province.
The Post Courier reports the member for North Wahgi Benjamin Mul, who earlier in the year told the newspaper that he is a walking ATM, was detained by security forces.
The newsaper believes his arrest may be the first for this election, despite widespread allegations of such practices.

Vote counting begins in 30 PNG electorates

Vote counting has commenced in at least 30 of the 111 seats in Papua New Guinea’s general election while polling has been extended by the Electoral Commission.
The two-week polling schedule for the five-yearly poll was originally scheduled to end on Friday but due to a series of delays had to be extended into this week for a few provinces.
In two of these provinces, Chimbu and Eastern Highlands, extra defence force personnel have been deployed to bolster security around polling amid reports of a weapons buildup around election activities in the Highlands.
Meanwhile, the incumbent Governor of PNG’s National Capital District, Powes Parkop, has taken the early lead in counting for this key seat, and his Social Democrats have the lead in two seats overall.
In the only confirmed result to date, the caretaker Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has held on to his Ialibu-Pangia seat on first vote counts, with his People’s National Congress leading in five overall.
Independent candidates lead in six seats and the Triumph Heritage Empowerment party in four.

Bad News to my opinion ...
Somare is ahead of Allan Bird in East Sepik.
5,988 votes to 5,479 votes out of a total of 20,081 counted.
This is only 7.24% of the votes counted but could be considered an indication of how the final vote tallies.
The country would be far better off if Somare doesn't return as a Minister from his district.

PNG election observer says some disruptions in counting process

A domestic observer monitoring Papua New Guinea’s general election says that there have been some disruptions in the counting process which is underway in 8 of the country’s 22 provinces.
While around 80 percent of the country has finished voting, the Electoral Commission has extended polling into a third week in several provinces where delays have been experienced.
Elsewhere, there have been reports of scrutineers, including people who work for candidates, interfering with the counting process.
An election observer, Ray Anere, of the National Research Institute, confirms that there are a number of incidents related to issues of fairness which will need to be taken up after the election, including interference with ballot boxes.
“And there have been some disputes, particularly by scrutineers, which have led to delay of counting but I think those delays have been addressed. So yes, there are some hiccups on the way that amount to a disruption of the counting process, that’s here in the National Capital District.”

Meanwhile, the Speaker of parliament, Jeffrey Nape, has been charged with bribery after allegedly trying to pay an opposing candidate to withdraw his nomination.
