It has recently come to our attention that there have been hacker attempts against ShareholdersUnite from Russian and Chinese sources for unknown reasons. We are currently taking measures to further protect this site and the information posted within it. While we do not believe the operation of this site will be negatively impacted we felt it was important to advise you of the situation.
Sunday Aug 20 Update
Hello everyone. A further update to this issue. The attacks appears to be an automated bot that is searching for open ports to gain access to the server. Measures have been put in place to block these specific attacks at the firewall and continued monitoring for these style of attacks will be ongoing. Additionally, ShareholdersUnite will be engaging a security expert to perform a security vulnerability assessment against the website over the next few weeks. Stay tuned.
As for the cause for this attack, the most likely reason is to gather account information although we want to make it very clear that there have been no indications that this has happened. It is important for people to know that your password is saved in the database in a secure and unreadable format using a MD5/salt algorithm. With that being said it is good practice to regularly change your password and ShareholdersUnite would highly recommend that you do so. To change your password:
- Click the User CP link at the top, middle right of the page.
- Click the Change Password link in the left hand column halfway down the page.

Enter your old password and then your new password twice.
- Passwords should be at least 8 characters in length
- Passwords should contain at least one upper and lower case
- Passwords should contain a numeric or special character
- For example: G00dP&ssword
- Click Update Password
