Oil firm meeting PNG fuel demands

The Nationl, Wednesday 03rd October, 2012

OIL and gas company InterOil PNG produces 36,000 barrels per day to meet the country’s domestic demands for refined products, including jet fuel, diesel and gasoline.
The company owns assets and operates three business segments, upstream, midstream and downstream at Napanapa.
Capital markets vice-president Wayne Andrews said most petroleum products produced at its refinery are for domestic markets.
He said the refinery facility located outside Port Moresby at Napanapa is self sufficient for water, steam and power.
“There is an on-site laboratory operated by an independent company, Intertek, to ensure InterOil produces quality fuel and meets world standard requirements.
He said the refined products were distributed domestically in the country on a wholesale and retail basis.
He also said surplus products such as naptha and those that are not for Papua New Guinea markets were exported overseas.
Andrews said InterOil needs the government’s support to attract right investors to develop huge resources in gas projects.
“The PNG market mostly consumes middle distillates like kerosene or diesel from Kutubu crude yield,” he said.
Process engineer Nerius Kua confirmed this, saying last year’s average middle distillates for PNG were 19,000 barrel a day.
He said this during a media tour of the refinery at Napanapa yesterday to inform journalists of InterOil’s processes and products.
He said there were different types of crude and its processing rate was dictated by the demand for middle distillates.
