Hmmmm, With 14 million shares short they really do not have much to work with in terms of getting it to drop. If deal is as imminent as we all think then I just do not see this happening. If it does it would be a great opportunity to load up, but I think far fetched even for the most manipulated of stocks.
My feeling is quite the opposite. An imminent deal will contribute to a nice rise in PPS daily.
This is why it is not wise to play options with IOC. Can't predict timing of anything.

Tension between need to cover and how to knock pps down.
I'd go for $20+ drop in a day or 2 if I ghd to cover.
I have my idea how I'd do that and I'mnot even going to talk about it. Point is, we just may get a ST real nasty baseless allegation and it should be this month.
Might not need any nasty allegation. So far it has dropped from $77 to almost $68. A $2 drop a day gets the PPS down $20 without much fanfare. Most of the shorting is naked at this point. Much easier to do on offshore dark pools, which is a lot of IOV volume. So they can short heavily and cover slowly batting shares back and forth for a few days prior to having to face delivery.
Maybe the plan is to drop it for as long as that works , until some buying steps in, which hasnt happened yet, and then drop the bomb looking for a 10% drop day. Who knows. But they are clearly in the drivers seat

Warren Buffett calls daily trading a random walk. Persons would be advised to IGNORE daily movements. The money is made getting the stock right at the right time. Is IOC close to a deal that transforms the company forever?? Can anyone catch the bottom. Will the stock price per share reflect the derisking of IOC's assets and future cash flows. DUH!

I dont think anyone is advising selling JFT. Simply tring to get a realistic assessment of current trading. I agree with Tree that this will get ugly, I just see it as a walk down rather than a bear raid for the next week or so. Perhaps a bear raid when they get it lower. But why waste their powder on a bear raid now when they can drop it $2 a day on miniscule volume?

I remain convinced that a lot of this is being done using "intra day naked shorting", every morning we are marked down, and then inthe afternoon, capped and naked short covered, therefore leaving no tracks of this going on. Can't borrow? well then use intra day naked shorts. I don't believe those orchestrating the silence are aware of this. just my opinon, otherwise how could the stock be walked down like this?

I agree 100% trans. Legal? No. Accepted and done? Yes. Most of IOC trades are not done via NYSE. My contention is that at least 50% are dark pools existing outside USA. I'll also state again that I dont think the shorts are worried in the least about any squeeze. They have made 5 times as much money on the constant churn over the years than they would lose if IOC ever does a deal and PPS goes up $40. On top of that Id think they are somewhat hedged. Its been an Atm for years. A deal wont blow them up. All IMO.

Someone has made a silence decision. Tree, you're in the know much more than me.
