Neglected Wabo rescued

InterOil has come to the rescue of one of Gulf Province’s neglected tribes. It’s the Wabo community.

Wabo is a remote government station in Baimuru district, formerly a patrol post, near to InterOil’s Elk and Antelope gas fields.

The station has been neglected for a long time and the local Pawaiian people have continually complained about lack of government services in Wabo.

On Tuesday, the community came alive with song and dance to welcome the InterOil delegation for the official opening of community complex and landowners’ trade store.

The delegation included Gulf Governor Havila Kavo and the InterOil team.

Before the projects were launched, a brief reconciliation ceremony took place between Governor Kavo and the elk antelope community.

Apart from this service, InterOil has also built a modern office and accommodation complex to foster local and provincial government functions in education, health and business development in Wabo and surrounding villages.

The public private partnership continues to assist schools, and provide charters for medical evacuations, community water tank projects and transportation of building materials for communities along the Purari River and other remote areas in the Gulf Province.

Sam,

I agree 100%. It's like all of the journalists in PNG & surrounding areas woke up this morning and realized "oh hey check out this O&G company IOC. Apparently they have been in PNG for over 10 years actually trying to help out the community. Maybe we should give them some Solid PR."

Also wonder if O'Neill's return from East Britain is signaling "go time". He's been away for a few days getting some things taken care of and done there. He's now back and it appears he's hit the ground running. IOC likely kicked this off for a reason.

Didn't have my glasses on when I saw the video this morning. Was that Adam being carried into the village on a stick for the celebration?

Ha! That's good Art. Symbolic.

Interesting thing is that one of the stories in this mentioned this was a conciliatory thing between the Wabo people and Kavo. Back in 2010 these people called Kavo out for not doing his job. IOC has helped make him look good in this. That'll do a lot in keeping him solidly in the IOC camp. He's a huge IOC supporter.
