i couldn't understand your original "ludicrous" comment.  But yes oil can be flared.  Well test operations have flare booms for oil and gas for exploration wells.  If practical and profitable testers will separate and store the liquid HCs to sell.  If there's no PL, roads or navigable river close by, then you have to flare it or reinject  it.

On sidetracking it depends on the laws in PNG in part. .  It seems like they would

announce as soon as they have a discovery .
