NQ acquisitions in 2014
#1

NQ seems to have acquired the following companies in 2014. Mostly NQ will mention about this acquisitions in next earnings call. No idea how much NQ spent for acquiring these companies.

1. Expai

  • http://expai.com    This company is incorporated in 2012 and also a subsidiary of NQ - http://tinyurl.com/n7vk4mf . A chinese advertising technology company making interactive technology pioneer and market leader in visual search technology. Expai offers image-based online advertising over mobile devices and PC.
  • Outside China, Expai has an office in Santa Clara, CA. http://expai.com/abouts.html I am able to reach them on phone and I confirm this office exists.
  • NQ started with strategic investment in Expai in early 2013, I think now NQ owns 100% of this company as I see job postings of this company on NQ hirings site.
  • NQ is actively hiring developers and managers for this division and posted 15 job postings for 18 positions since Aug 14th after acquisition. http://nq.hirede.com/careersite/index (open in chrome. filter the jobs by department : 亿拍 ( 'one hundred million shot' )

  • It is a mobile game development company. Founded in 2012. http://tinyurl.com/msa6a68
  • Released games such as Summon the dragon, Gold secrets of the past and Martiel etc..
  • FL mobile acquired this comany in 2014 - http://itjuzi.com/company/817
  • Company website - http://www.red-infinity.com  seems to be down or may be taken down as this might have merged into FL mobile.
  • Haven't seen any job postings on NQ career site, but company name is present in the department filter list on career site. Indication that this company belongs to NQ.

4. Beijing Century Hetu Software Technology Co., Ltd

  • Founded in 2011. This company is a mobile game developer and they released games such as First Empire and Pocket Dream.

5.  Shenzhen Bo Technology Co.,Ltd

  • Company website www.symbolmedia.cn . FL mobile and Expai listed as partners at the end of the home page. I'm sure this is owned by NQ as I see job postings on NQ career site for this company.

Sure looks like the current NQ strategy is either making their friends rich or buying up all of the local talent. I wish I understood this business much better as these guys seem to be putting together quite a puzzle. Are they really that smart? I suspect this kind of acquisition environment is enough to make the best auditor's head spin.

It seems some of these acquisitions like FL Mobile, NationSky, Rui Feng, Doreso and VLife are turned out to be VERY good investments at the end. Particularly, FL Mobile and NationSky is going to contribute 40-50% of total NQ revenues this year. Also, NQ recently sold around 5% stake in both these companies which gives them "post-money valuation" of almost $1 billion combined. Also, impressed with recent Sprint/China Mobile deals on NQ Live front.

I guess these acquisitions might be the reason why Deloitte took almost 7 months to complete its investigation.

But now I noticed FL mobile and Expai listed as partners at the end of the home page. So i am sure this is the right website.

My guess is that they have some contractor project for asia pacific news to bring their newspaper business on the mobile. One of Expai application can let user take picture of paper news of asia pacific newspaper and search mobile link of that news, so people can easily share/discuss/follow up news they see on the tranditional newspaper.

some interesting idea, maybe would be a revolution in the future newspaper industry. but right now i don't have any high expectation of either Symbol media or Expai
