Christophe de Margerie, chief executive officer at Total SA (FP), Europe’s third-largest oil company, died in a Moscow plane crash, Interfax reported.

The 63-year-old CEO died at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport when a business jet crashed, Interfax said citing an unidentified law enforcement official. All four people on the plane died and were French citizens, Interfax said.

De Margerie started his career in Total’s finance department in 1974 and took over as CEO at the French company in February 2007, when that post was split from the chairman’s.

Before becoming chief executive, de Margerie, known by the nickname “Big Mustache,” because of his curved mustache, oversaw exploration and production and headed up Total’s business in some of the world’s political hotspots including Iraq, Iran and Myanmar.

From Russian newspaper, "Russia Today"
"Total said they will gather board members “as soon as possible.” Prior to his death, de Margerie said that his successor would likely come from inside, and not outside, the company.
Two possible candidates are the Philippe Boisseau, head of marketing and services and Pouyanne Patrick, in charge of refining and chemicals.
Shares in the company fell nearly 7 percent on the news. Total is the fourth largest Western oil company, after only Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron."

I thought it was kind of strange for a snowplow to collide with a small jet. No conspiracy just drunk driving. Sigh.

With Russia you never know what the real facts are.  Sad for his family, friends and colleagues.  This will have some effect on all future  direction of the company.  We just don't know what.  Leaders lead......differently.

Interoil has the cheapest LNG project in the planning stages per the experts .
Please read Macquarie or Bernstein or Credit Suisse for verification.
The cheapest are like magnets for the tight money . Then we have Australia. Hoho.
