Minister Duban plans gas-power for NCD

   Minister for Petroleum and Energy, Nixon Philip Duban is initiating a massive 30-hectare land area at Konebada Petroleum Park (KPP) to become available for a gas-powered electricity project that will supply the whole Port Moresby city. Minister Duban directed KPP to make available 30-hectares of land through various consultation with the National Petroleum Company of PNG and the ExxonMobil. According to Minister Duban’s office, all parties have agreed to the project.

  The gas-powered plant will generate about 100 kilowatts of electricity for National Capital District that can also supply Central province. “It is also my wish that we should consider Southern Highlands and Hela provinces as the resource owners to benefit from this project,” said Mr Duban. The MP for Madang said discussion and planning are at a preliminary stage and a submission would be made to seek cabinet’s approval. Duban said moving the power generating facilities to KPP is an important achievement, as the park will be given prominence to attract petro-chemical companies to set up their plants with better geographical location for its cooling system.

  He said the proposal is also ideal for redevelopment of unused land at KPP and would also provide attraction for wharves to be built there. “The proposed petroleum park will be a unique model and already number of companies wanting to access gas from domestic marketing obligation are knocking at the Department of Petroleum and Energy to sign a MOU (memorandum of understanding),” said Duban. Minister Duban said it is a step forward and he urged interested companies to talk directly with project operators Elk Antelope and Stanley Gas for the project to be commercially driven.

  He added that Stanley Gas would power some of the areas without electricity and it is a great initiative by the government. Hydro-electricity has been the main source of energy but the present government is initiating the use of gas as another source that could supply electricity to many urban and rural areas in Papua New Guinea.

There you have it. E/A gas will be piped to Konebada. E/A operator Interoil will strike DMO gas sales agreements with interested industries in need of nattie. Operator IOC, that reminds me of something. Doesn't the LNG Operatorship of IOC's LNG Project pass to IOC after 5 years. per PA? That role is worth mucho dinero para IOC.

It also seems to me there is a possibility of IOC selling gas to those kinds of buyers from places like Raptor, or Wahoo, which is much closer to PM with some existing roads and other infrastructure, rather than or in addition to E/A.

I reread the article several times and couldn't conclude anything about where the E/A gas would be available especially given the comment 'talk to IOC' and benefitting Gulf. Pretty ambiguous.

It has to be 100 MW.  I saw that number and just shrugged my shoulders thinking few people who write for publications really understand the engineering units. Actually, even 100 MW seems a little small.  Nucor Steel Louisiana will be producing 500 MW with 250 MW going to the grid.   A single moderately large GE gas turbine can easily produce 100 MW.
