"Van Dover was recently invited down to Papua New Guinea by TED, the “ideas worth spreading” nonprofit, which had organized a seafaring expedition to tackle ocean issues. She was asked to give a talk about deep sea mining aboard the National Geographic Orion, as it cruised over the tropical waters soon to be worked by Nautilus."

Please let there be a TED talk about Nautilus/deep-sea mining. I dont care if it even frames it in a negative light - it would be great exposure....

SMD’s Deputy CEO Mike Jones commented: “The programme to develop these machines has been SMD’s largest, longest and most complex to date.  The system we have developed is a world first combining technology from our deep water, high power trenchers and land based mining technology.  It is a testimony to the many thousands of hours of hard work from a dedicated team of engineers, technicians and managers.  We have also partnered with a number of key suppliers who have made valuable contributions.  This is a very important milestone on our journey with Nautilus Minerals to develop what will be the start of a new industry.  We look forward to the next stage which is proving the technology in submerged tests, and then the further phases of installation, commissioning and finally putting the complete system to work in PNG.”

Nautilus’s CEO Mike Johnston CEO commented: “We put out to the world of engineering to come up with a solution to mine high grade material off the seafloor transport it up to a vessel without impacting on the environment. Eventually we selected what we believe is the best company, and the best solution which happens to be SMD. The result is these machines that you see today.”
