THE government has so far recouped nearly K1 billion through the Task Force Sweep team initiative, according to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
And he said the K700 million allocated for the free education policy this year was secured through this exercise, and not from other sectors as claimed by critics.
He told a crowd at Yame Yame village, Ialibu, Southern Highlands: “Some people are claiming that PNG will face a budget shortfall of K500 million because the government has exhausted its budget by sourcing funding from other sectors to fund important programmes like free education and health services.
“But I want to assure you all that the funds allocated to other sectors of the economy remain and the funds used for free education policy were secured from fighting corruption through the Sweep team.
“More money will be secured through this exercise and the funds will be utilised to invest in the other priority areas that lack necessary funding.”
He said the Sweep team initiative was one of the priority areas aimed to fighting corruption and was implemented successfully.
He challenged the seven candidates vying for his Ialibu-Pangia seat to announce what policies they had to make a difference."
