Why I own Interoil
#4
I am not knowledgeable about the June deadline. I only have the opinion that PNG is always free to do anything they want to as a sovereign. However there are risks to certain actions that amount to confiscation of IOC's assets that few would think PNG would be willing to take. The risk of chilling all international investment of course is one. Interoil locking the doors on all of its gas stations and refinery might be another. It is hard to imagine anything good coming to the country from such a decision. It is not hard to imagine on the other hand such a decision could initiate a series of events that could bring down the entire government and loss of PNG's independence.

I personally have faith that if nothing else, the goodwill IOC has generated in PNG for well over a decade, the friends they have made, the amount of money invested and put at risk, and the difficult political and institutional environment in which they have had to move forward towards FID are all issues that each by themselves would give more than enough reason to grant any necessary extension of time for the 2009 PA.

That's just the way I see it. If I'm wrong I stand to lose a lot of money by my personal standards. But I'll be in the company of some very powerful people and business interests who will be losing much, much more and who can't be rolled quite so easily.
