Advantages for users:
- No media player nor plugins needed, it works with a HTML5 compatible browser
Advantages for companies:
- No streaming servers needed, this works with a normal web server
- No multiple format problems (and multiple-streamer servers needed) which:
- reaches all of the addressable market
- no transcoding cost, having to transcode media files into multiple formats
- Local cache: since it's regular web content, your local ISP stores it on their local server (unlike media coming from a streaming server), which distributes it nicely and makes it accessible to others, saving on bandwidth and the need for the Akamai's of this world (content distribution providers).
It is pretty compelling and I think people would benefit by profiting from the recent weakness in the shares.
